HealthWell Launches Financial Toxicity & Patient Navigation: A Solutions-Focused Webinar Series

Over 90 percent of health care professionals, patients, and caregivers attending HealthWell’s first webinar on financial toxicity and patient navigation said they have encountered patients with financial concerns that would cause them to forgo treatment. This finding reflects the scope and severity of an issue facing millions of Americans: Even with insurance, many simply cannot afford the high price of medications, treatments, and ancillary costs associated with having a chronic or life-altering medical condition.

Financial toxicity has been well studied and documented over the past decade-plus and HealthWell’s new webinar series was created to showcase the programs, services, solutions, and partnerships that help patients navigate financial toxicity with clarity and support.

Supporting Patients Together: Financial Assistance Across the Continuum of Care

The first webinar in the series, Supporting Patients Together: Financial Assistance Across the Continuum of Care, was attended by over 460 people on February 26, and is available for on-demand replay. Moderated by Michael Heimall, FACHE, President & CEO, HealthWell Foundation, the webinar featured a group of expert panelists from across the spectrum of cancer care:

  • Joanna Fawzy Doran, Esq., CEO, Triage Cancer
  • Arif Kamal, MD, MBA, MHS, Chief Patient Officer, American Cancer Society
  • Janel Bush, recipient of a HealthWell Foundation Ovarian Cancer – Medicare Access Fund grant

“Webinar attendees were given the knowledge needed to define financial toxicity and identify its key drivers, along with the impact it has on patients,” said Heimall. “They received insights on the importance of screening for financial hardship at every stage of the cancer journey and learned to recognize common myths about financial burdens and where they come from.”

A significant portion of the webinar focused on actionable programs, tools, and services offered by the American Cancer Society, Triage Cancer, and the HealthWell Foundation to support cancer patients navigating financial challenges.

In addition to providing insights and actionable information, the webinar offered continuing medical education (CME) and continuing education (CE) credits to physicians, nurses, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and social workers.
