Breaking Down Barriers to Care: A Look Back at 2023

In the midst of this season of gratitude and giving, I am grateful for many things: My good health, my family and friends, my rewarding career and dedicated staff, and the support of individual and corporate donors whose giving allows HealthWell to assist so many people in need. Your generous support is helping to break down one of the most significant barriers to health care today – its high cost.

I would be remiss if I didn’t also acknowledge all the other non-profit organizations that support patients in need. Their dedication to providing a sense of community and no-cost services also is helping to break down what, at times, are seemingly insurmountable barriers to care. This past year, we were honored to shine a spotlight on many such organizations here at Real World Health Care.

We also were honored to acknowledge the challenging, yet rewarding role that family caregivers play in patients’ lives. These caregivers face their own set of barriers as they endeavor to find the time, money, energy, and good spirits to provide support patients can’t get anywhere else. Your loved ones thank you. We thank you.

In addition to sharing information and insights for caregivers on this blog, HealthWell was proud this year to launch our new Family Caregivers web page, which is full of useful advice, words of support, and additional resources to help these dedicated friends and family members who give so much to the people they love. We will continue to update this page throughout 2024, so please bookmark it for future reference.

If you’re new to Real World Health Care, or if it’s been a while since you’ve followed our coverage of health issues impacting underinsured Americans, I invite you to take a look back at our 2023 articles on caregiving, health disparities relating to food and transportation insecurity, the importance of maintaining patient nutrition through vitamins and supplements, and other barriers to care.

Next year, Real World Health Care will continue to highlight the programs and organizations doing the hard and necessary work of breaking down barriers to care. We will report on how HealthWell and other non-profits are working to “end cancer as we know it” by partnering with The White House’s Cancer Moonshot Initiative. We will share news and resources from organizations supporting people living with diabetes. Plus, we will seek to answer questions many Medicare patients have about how provisions of the Inflation Reduction Act will affect their medication cost-sharing obligations.

I hope you will check back in with Real World Health Care in the new year. Read our articles. Share them with your friends, family, and colleagues. Sign up for alerts so you don’t miss new posts. Let us know if you have an idea for an article. Or give us feedback on something you’ve seen on this site.

On behalf of everyone at Real World Health Care and the HealthWell Foundation, I wish you a festive holiday season and a happy and healthy new year!
