A Word from Our President & CEO

I hope 2026 is off to a fantastic start for you and your loved ones. Hard to believe that we are already in February and have several more weeks of winter ahead of us. At this point, I’m sure we could all use a ray or two of sunshine and temperatures above zero degrees.

Michael Heimall, FACHE President & CEO

Before sharing some highlights of our 2025 achievements, I wanted to take a moment to share my gratitude to all of our corporate and individual donors for continuing to place their trust and support in the HealthWell Foundation.

As a result of your generosity, we were able to open new funds, assist more patients than ever before, and continue to execute on our mission to ensure no one goes without critical, often lifesaving, medical treatments simply because they cannot afford them.

Your generosity has brought hope and healing to underinsured patients who may have foregone health care if they had not reached out to us for assistance. We are truly thankful that we can be a lifeline to those in need. Thank you for your support!

The Reality of Health Care for Those We Serve

When you think of words to describe the health care landscape in 2025, “anxiety” and “uncertainty” would probably be at the top of your list.

As we enter 2026, health care has become even more expensive and harder to access than ever before, leaving the patients we serve feeling unsure about how these cost and access issues will affect them.

Changes in health care policies and procedures left us a bit anxious as well: Would the new Medicare caps on out-of-pocket drug costs mean fewer patients reaching out to us for assistance? Would higher premiums for ACA Marketplace insurance plans send more patients in search of assistance? And would all these changes impact the way in which donors work with us to help patients in need?

Yet amid these changes and uncertainty, one thing remains clear – HealthWell’s commitment to ensuring that patients do not forgo needed care simply because they cannot afford it. And despite the welcome relief of Medicare drug price caps, millions of Americans do indeed still need help. About one in five adults say they have not filled a prescription because of the cost, and one in ten say they have cut pills in half or skipped doses of medicine because of the cost.

It is abundantly clear that assistance from HealthWell continues to be a lifeline for many Americans and we thank our individual and corporate donors for their support of our mission. In 2025, your generosity allowed us to assist over 422,000* patients through more than $1.15 billion* in grants.

We’ll be sharing more details about our 2025 achievements soon in our annual Year In Review, so please stay tuned. Meanwhile, here are just a few highlights:

  • We were honored to receive approximately $530 million* in donations from our generous corporate and individual donors.
  • We launched or reopened 15 funds in 2025, including a new fund to help Medicare patients living with Parkinson’s disease, a new fund to assist individuals living with Bronchiectasis, and a new fund to assist Americans with insurance premium costs for ACA Marketplace plans.
  • HealthWell ranked #17 on Forbes’ 2025 List of America’s Top 100 Charities and was recognized as one of only eight charities nationwide to achieve a 100 percent fundraising efficiency rating.
  • We were proud to receive RXinsider’s Pharmacy500 award for 2025 and 2026. The Pharmacy500 is awarded to 500 pharmacy supply chain businesses and associations that significantly impacted dispensing pharmacies in the U.S.
  • Our valued employees donated 234 hours of volunteer time to support 14 local events and organizations that align with our mission. Learn more about HealthWell’s Community Engagement and Support here.

We couldn’t do any of this without you! Thank you for your continued support of HealthWell.

“We Are Thankful Every Day”

Lou and Kathy

Reading words of thanks from grateful grant recipients and their loved ones warms our hearts on chilly winter days and throughout the year. Kathy K. from Mesa, Arizona, recently reached out to share her and her husband Lou’s thoughts after he received a grant through our Cardiomyopathy – Medicare Access fund:

“We are so very grateful for the grant from HealthWell which pays the deductible for my husband’s medication. When we heard the yearly cost of the drug – $250,000 – we were stunned! Then when we found out our portion would be $2,200 each month, we knew that this would completely strain the budget of two retired teachers.

Then came the exciting news that HealthWell would pay the deductible. This was a miracle, and we are so thankful every day for this grant. It is one of the few bright spots in our 10-month journey with Transthyretin Amyloid Cardiomyopathy (ATTR-CM). We are profoundly grateful.”

Thank You for Your Patience!

The start of a new calendar year is always a busy time for HealthWell, and this January was no exception. We experienced a flood of calls coming into the HWF Direct hotline as over 144,750 people reached out to us for assistance, an increase of 66% over January 2025. As a result, our hotline’s wait time and document processing turnaround time are longer than usual. We truly appreciate your patience as we work diligently to serve everyone as quickly as possible. Please know that if you have not received a response from our team or your submitted documents show as pending in your portal, they are in the queue to be reviewed in the order they are received.

Generous Donors Bring Smiles and Hope to America’s Underinsured

GivingTuesday, the annual day of giving initiative, provided HealthWell an opportunity to spread the word about our life-changing work and bring a smile and hope to the next million Americans who reach out to us for assistance.

Our three-week campaign, featuring touching stories and videos from HealthWell grant recipients on our social channels, had a bold goal: raise $100,000 to help patients in need. Thanks to the generosity of 1,001 individual donors, we are thrilled to report that we exceeded our goal, raising $185,000, putting 100% of donations to work immediately to help patients in need.

“GivingTuesday capped off a year of incredible generosity from individual donors,” said Abby Pevey, Senior Manager, Individual Giving & Development, HealthWell Foundation. “We received a record-breaking $4.07 million* in individual donations in 2025, and we are so grateful for the support of our ever-growing family of over 89,000 individual donors.”

Abby Pevey Senior Manager, Individual Giving & Development

“Every contribution helps,” said Pevey. “So many of our individual donors are either current or previous grant recipients themselves, or they know someone who has been impacted by HealthWell’s lifesaving assistance. Their continued compassion and commitment to giving what they can when they can to help a stranger in need is truly inspiring. I wish I could thank each one individually. Our mission would be impossible without their support.”

“As a development professional, it was exciting to see how extensively the HealthWell Board and staff participated in this year’s campaign,” she added. “Everyone was committed to the campaign’s success, and our internal teams worked hand-in-hand, contributing their time and talent wherever possible, from the initial planning stages through implementation.”

In addition, we are also grateful that our GivingTuesday campaign was publicized by Stingray Advertising, who created an in-store media campaign to help support our mission! Special thanks to our friends at Stingray for helping us spread the word about our campaign and your support of our life-changing work.

New Fund Helps Individuals Living with Bronchiectasis

In December, HealthWell opened a new fund to assist individuals living with bronchiectasis. Through the fund, HealthWell provides up to $12,000 in medication copayment or insurance premium (Medicare Part B) assistance to eligible patients with annual household incomes up to 500 percent of the federal poverty level.

“Bronchiectasis is a chronic condition that requires proper treatment and management to help prevent lung infections and flare-ups. For some people living with the disease, treatments may be cost prohibitive, and many patients may go without simply because they cannot afford them,” said Elisha Malanga, Executive Director of Bronchiectasis and NTM Association. “We applaud the HealthWell Foundation for recognizing the importance of supporting this community and for providing financial resources for those living with the condition so they can access and adhere to proper treatment regimens.”

For more information and to determine eligibility for assistance, visit HealthWell’s Bronchiectasis Fund page.

When Insurance Isn’t Enough: A Parent’s Type 1 Diabetes Story

HealthWell was honored to sponsor a recent episode of Inside the Children’s Hospital, a podcast that features intimate conversations with families navigating pediatric health care and the professionals who care for them.

The podcast episode explores how one Mom moved from denial to “work mode” throughout her daughter’s Type 1 Diabetes journey – from dismissing “textbook” symptoms to navigating financial challenges – and discusses how HealthWell helps families afford lifesaving medications. HealthWell Completes a Busy Conference Schedule in 2025

Attending health care conferences is an excellent way for HealthWell to spread the word about our services to stakeholders like patient advocacy organizations, health care providers, and pharmacies.

We capped off a year of 18 conferences in 2025, including the AASLD-The Liver Meeting in November and the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists Midyear Clinical Meeting in December.

Your Support Changes Lives

At HealthWell, we are forever grateful for the financial support we receive from our corporate and individual donors. Your donations ensure that we are here to provide life-changing grants to patients who may suffer serious medical consequences without treatment. When that treatment seems millions of miles away, and all hope is lost, a grant from HealthWell can be the difference between paying for potentially lifesaving medications or daily needs, like food or utilities. We don’t ever want anyone to have to make those choices. Your donation helps us say “yes we can help you” to thousands of patients every year. Help us say “yes” to more patients today!

We know that not everyone is able to provide a financial donation to HealthWell. That’s OK! Did you know that helping us spread the word about our life-changing work is a critical and highly valued contribution? Here are just a few ideas of how you can help us communicate about the life-changing work we do:

  1. Create a Facebook fundraiser to commemorate a birthday, anniversary, or other special occasion.
  2. Share your HealthWell story with others.
  3. Connect with HealthWell on our social channels through the links below.
