Determining Eligibility

The first step to getting help from the HealthWell Foundation is to make certain that we currently offer assistance for your particular disease. For an updated listing of diseases, see our Diseases page. The HealthWell Foundation adds new disease funds throughout the year, so please visit this site regularly for the latest information.

The HealthWell Foundation considers an individual's financial, medical, and insurance situation when determining who is eligible for assistance. We make every effort to assist all eligible patients who contact us – that is the heart of our mission. Financial criteria are based on multiples of the federal poverty level, which takes into account a family’s size. Families with incomes up to four times the federal poverty level may qualify. The Foundation also considers the cost of living in a particular city or state.

The Foundation is able to help patients receiving treatment only for selected diseases. We can only assist with medications that have been prescribed to treat the disease/covered diagnosis. The HealthWell Foundation adds new disease funds throughout the year, so please visit this site regularly for the latest information. You will be asked to provide the Foundation with the patient's diagnosis, which must be verified by a physician, nurse practitioner, or physician assistant’s signature. The patient must receive treatment in the United States.

To qualify for assistance from HealthWell, patients must have some form of prescription drug insurance that covers part of the cost of their treatment.  HealthWell does not consider drug discount cards to be insurance.  The Foundation will refer patients without prescription insurance to other programs, such as drug company patient assistance programs.

Patients enrolled in the HealthWell Foundation are free to change their physicians, pharmacy, or other provider, or the type of medication they are taking for a specific disease at any time without affecting their eligibility for assistance.

The Foundation grants assistance on a first-come, first-served basis to the extent that funding is available. The HealthWell Foundation Board of Directors sets the eligibility criteria and has final determination in all cases. Individuals covered by private insurance, employer-sponsored plans, Medicare or Medicaid may be eligible.
